Duck and Joe are both veteran Kansas City jazz musicians. Their sound highlights the traditional Kansas City jazz sound – but they also reach out of the genre to cover contemporary and classic R & B and pop tunes. Duck’s rich baritone voice earned him Kansas City’s best male vocalist title three years in a row. Joe is a classically trained pianist more well-known for his versatility as a jazz performer. Both have performed for international audiences and are always appreciated by their hometown audiences.

Brazilian jazz specialist, headliner Danny is joined by the great electric bassist Greg Whitfield. Both are members of the Sons of Brasil, a group that has performed together for 25 years. Come delight in the distinctive jazz rhythms of Jobim, Djavan, Buarque, Veloso, Caymmi and many other fine Brazilian composers, along with original compositions. Danny has toured Brasil twice and Greg is very experienced and musically steeped in the country’s culture.

A la Mode Duo features guitarist/composer Clayton DeLong with vocalist/percussionist Jesica Poell. Born in California and raised in Kansas City, Clayton began playing guitar at age 16. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from University of Missouri Kansas City, Conservatory of Music where he studied jazz guitar under Kansas City greats such as Rod Fleeman, Danny Embrey and Bobby Watson. Jessica has studied classical voice and performed on stages from Arrowhead Stadium to Carnegie Hall to the Plaza Art Fair and is a Chaz favorite. The A la Mode duo performs jazz from standards to French gypsy, Latin and swing.

Megan Birdsall is a songstress nurtured in a creative home and in the Kansas City jazz community. The talented vocalist and composer has recorded two CDs: Track 13 featuring original material and an amalgam of jazz, blues and pop interpretations of diverse artists ranging from Cole Porter to Joni Mitchell, the Beatles and Stevie Wonder. Little Jazz Bird is a paean to traditional jazz standards. She was named “Best Kansas City Jazz Musician” for 2009/10 by PitchWeekly. She has performed in prestigious settings in Kansas City and elsewhere – performing tonight in the intimate confines of Chaz on the Plaza.

Chaz draws a loyal flock of regulars Sunday nights to hear a diverse repertoire performed by the Mengel Brothers. Dana and Les Mengel are among the top classical musicians in the Kansas City area. Both studied at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and appear as members of many local Community Orchestras. Dana, composer/violinist, has had over 1,000 choral anthems published since 1990. An ASCAP award recipient every year since 1992, his works have been performed internationally. Some of his newer works are featured on the brothers' play list. Les, cellist/bassist, has performed with the Kansas City Symphony, taught at William Jewell College and reached semi-finals in the Concours International Chamber Music Competition in Paris. Guests appreciate their fresh stylings on classical compositions as well as riffs on jazz, pop and rock from artists such as the Beatles and Doors.

Voted 2011 Person of the Year by Plasticsax.com and Best Bassist by Pitch Magazine, headliner Jeff Harshbarger has had an eclectic career. A prolific composer and bandleader in his own right, Jeff has recorded and performed across the globe with varied artists including Kansas City jazz legends Bobby Watson and Milt Abel. He is a co-founder of Tzigane Music, an artist-run collective and record label, and is the curator of Jeff Harshbarger Presents: An Alternative Jazz Series, promoting new improvised music in Kansas City. Jeff has received numerous grants and awards, including The Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Fellowship, the Steans Institute Fellowship, the Creative Capital Foundation’s Professional Development Grant and the 2015 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award. Jeff also hosts Wednesday’s Jazz in the Afternoon from 1-3 pm on 90.1 FM KKFI.

Pianist-vocalist Rich Hill has a personal sound steeped in the rich jazz, blues and gospel traditions of his Kansas City hometown. His keyboard style is grounded in the long tradition of jazz piano from ragtime to stride, bebop and modern jazz. Depending on the song, he might play something that sounds like Fats Waller, then something with a kind of Bill Evans or Chick Corea feel, followed by a tune suggesting Ray Charles’ blues-tinged earthiness. His success entertaining audiences with his keyboard and vocal talents while maintaining a certain standard of artistry is a notable accomplishment proven by continued demand for bookings.

A 30 year veteran of the KC music scene, Steve plays with some of the cities top performers and has toured with chart topping heavyweights such as Percy Sledge, Sam & Dave, Tracy Bird, and was a core member of local KC band, The Classmen. Vocalist Shannon Lipps has worked in KC for over 10 years performing in various local rock, blues, jazz and country bands. She stays on the creative edge writing lyrics and co-composing for original works with The Ambient Stem (a branch of The UK’s Ambient Society). This versatile duo combines classic jazz and blues standards with more contemporary R&B and light rock covers.

One of the best guitarists ever to come out of Kansas City, Rod Fleeman uses acoustic guitar to showcase his love of of ’30s and ’40s jazz, blues and swing. Fingerstyle guitarist and singer Dan Bliss shows his old style guitar talents on tunes by artists such as Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Chuck Berry. Together, they produce a big sound, an irresistible vibe that moves audiences – sometimes to get their jittterbug groove on.

Kim Sivils has been immersed in Kansas City jazz since childhood. She has a deep connection with the music she plays and expresses it in her own distinct, yet understated sound. Kim has performed as a soloist and in jazz ensembles at jazz venues throughout the city. She is featured in Chaz as a piano soloist performing fresh arrangements of jazz standards and in ensembles. Steve Rigazzi is a bassist, composer and recording artist whose musical adventures have taken him to nine countries and three continents. Steve has toured the United States Air Force Band and toured with local legend Angela Hagenbach as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Jazz Ambassadors program. His passion for jazz and his humor have earned him favored status with Chaz audiences while performing in various ensembles.
