Country Club Plaza: Upscale Shopping, Dining & Entertainment
Kansas City’s iconic cultural center became America’s first suburban shopping district designed to accommodate the automobile when it opened in 1922. The Plaza was developed by J.C. Nichols, a visionary young developer of the day. He envisioned an upscale shopping and living area to attract an increasingly affluent citizenry expanding south from the historic downtown. The Plaza grew in reputation and its enduring success helped transform the way America lives and shops. Today, the Plaza remains a local treasure. It is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its distinct Moorish architecture, dazzling fountains, wrought-iron fenced courtyards, tree-lined boulevards, mosaics, statues and works of art. Its most famous tower is the Giralda Tower, one of three scaled replicas in the world modeled from the famed Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain. The 15-square block district is home to more than 150 shops and restaurants.
The 87th Annual Plaza Lighting Ceremony is Thanksgiving Thursday, November 24, 2016. Come experience the nation’s oldest and largest Thanksgiving Night holiday event. The Raphael guests hold a distinct advantage over most of the 250,000 visitors attracted to the event – complimentary parking and easy access to the festivities just footsteps from the Lobby. The sight of the 15-block, Spanish style Plaza with its red-tiled rooflines, classic Moorish towers and spires bedecked in festive holiday lights fills millions of visitors with holiday joy each year. The Season of the Lights runs from Thanksgiving through the second Sunday of January.
